The term DVR card is a loose term that can refer to two types of cards used in DVR devices. The first and most common is a TV Tuner Card which converts TV signals into digital data which can be stored on the DVRs hard drive.
As a second use the term DVR card could be applied to CableCards which are used to allow DVR players and other set top boxes to access Cable Company’s premium content and identify the customer. CableCards look like a small card which you insert into your DVR.
When searching online for DVR Cards you are most likely to find details on TV Tuner Cards rather than CableCards. Since set top box style DVR players already have the TV Tuner card built in then there is little demand for them. However as shown when you do a search on google there are many TV tuner cards that you can use in your PC. These cards are frequently accompanied with software that allows you to use your PC as a DVR. Any PC with a TV tuner card can use software such as GBPVR (free) or SnapStream to give the PC DVR functionality.
