Philips DVR Models

At the time of writing (August 2006) Philips have made 14 DVR models which are based on licensed TiVo technology. The earlier Philips DVR models (see list below) were standalone models which today are very much outdated with hard drive sizes between 14GB and 35GB.

Later models began to integrate DirecTV receivers allowing them to be used to access DirecTV satellite TV. The latest DVR model was a DSR708 70GB which is now beginning to become outdated as DVRs with much higher capacity enter the market.

Standalone early models:
HDR110, HDR112 (14GB)
HDR212 (20GB)
HDR310, HDR312 (2x14GB)
HDR31201, HDR31202, HDR31203, HDR31204 (30GB)
HDR612 (2x30GB)
DSR6000 35GB

More recent Models for use with DirecTV
DSR7000 (35GB)
DSR704 (35GB)
DSR708 (70GB)

If you are looking for a cheap DVR and don’t mind a smaller hard drive meaning fewer recording hours then an early Philips DVR can be a good purchase.

Philips Controversial DVR Patent:

One of the bigger news stories of 2006 to do with Philips and DVRs regarded a patent they filed which describes technology which would force DVR users to watch adverts. This would effectively take away one of the strongest selling points of DVRs, the ability to skip adverts. It is no surprise that this gave Philips a lot of bad press.
